In the main
cities of the oriental region (Tena, Francisco de Orellana and
Tulcan) there is a handful of restaurants;
but the menu is not that varied and the traveler will realize
that international food plates are scarce. Therefore,
if you are one of those that prefer the "known thing",
in these lands won't have more remedy than to experience new flavors.
The situation
is a little different in the camps (lodges). In most of them they
cook the same pottage for all the guests. When not having any
choosing alternative, you just have to trust in the cook's inspiration.
But don't
worry, the administrators of the housings have instructed their
native cooks to discard of the menu -except in the case of an
audacious tourist's expressed petition- the plates mades of monkey
meat, tapir meat or any other species of the forest. However,
there are typical ingredients like the banana (roasted or fried),
the spans, the chonta, the yucca that have not been "proscribed"
of the daily foods.
