ECUADOR NATURE
Entering the Ecological Reserve of Antisana, with its lagoons transformed into immense mirrors and strong gulches covered by a foggy forest, is an opportunity to know a unique landscape that gradually becomes into forest. In this reservation - which extension is of 120,000 hectares- we can find the Antisana volcano with its 5,758 meters of altitude. The three picks of this mountain are very hard to climb. The lagoons that surround it reflect its summits of ice. Indescribable beauty, ideal to be photographed. The reserve, created in July of 1993, is located on the edge of the Amazon prairie and it is considered as a corridor or nexus between the Ecological Reserve of Cayambe-coca and the Sumaco Napo Galeras National Park. These three areas conform one of the warmest areas in Ecuador and possess an enormous biodiversity. Among the
places of bigger interest of the area, there are: In 1760 the flow of lava of Antisanilla was formed and thirteen years later the last flow of lava called Potrerillos or Papallacta appeared. Its last volcanic detonations would have happened between 1801 and 1802, but there are some who believe that what happened in fact was the fall of ashes. Micacocha lagoon: It is the biggest in the reserve and is at the base of the volcano. Flows of lava -prints of the past volcanic activity- can be seen in the surroundings. Lagoon of the Muerte Pungu: Close to the pick called El Predicador and ideal for fishing. Lagoon of Santa Lucia: Also known as Mauca Machay, is an appropriate place for camping because of its beautiful landscapes; plus, it is possible to relax fishing. Flow of lava of Antisanilla: In this place the stones were "sculpted" in forms of waves by the flows of lava emerged from the earth. It has an extension of eleven kilometers long and two kilometers wide. Lagoon of Secas: It is believed that its dark green waters are product of the volcanic activity. El Tambo: It is an area of waterfalls and amazing deep passes in the cloudy forest. Hundreds of people go to the puddles close by the waterfalls due to the healing properties of these natural torrents. Caves of Jumandi: From this place of cloudy sky, one can observe the landscape transition that, little by little, gets the typical characteristics of the jungle areas. Cordillera of Macaws: It is part of the important biological corridor between Antisana, the Ecological Reserve of Cayambe-Coca and the Sumaco Napo Galeras National Park. Barrancos or Peñas del Isco: The Andean condors rest in their rocky walls. Here you can observe chuquiraguas forests and the unique Ecuadorian Hummingbird. |
